The Metropolitan Area Youth Jazz Orchestra (MAYJO) is an auditioned group of the finest high school students from the Omaha area. MAYJO performs concerts at UNO and in the community including featured slots at UNO's Great Plains Jazz Festival. MAYJO students have the opportunity to work closely with UNO faculty, professional musicians from Omaha and guest artists and clinicians that have included Benny Golson, Peter Erskine, Jim Pugh, Eric Marienthal, Stefon Harris, Kris Berg and many others. MAYJO members have been recognized in the Downbeat Student Music Awards and are regularly selected for NAfME All-National ensembles and Nebraska All-State bands and orchestra. This event is free of charge, donations will be accepted at the door to benefit the UNO Jazz Program.

MAYJO is directed by UNO’s Coordinator of Jazz Studies, Dr. Pete Madsen. MAYJO students enjoy regular sectional work with UNO’s world class Jazz Faculty included Ben Nichols, saxophone; Jason Johnson, trumpet and Brad Thomson, rhythm section. Many MAYJO students go on to pursue careers in music as educators, performers, composers, recording artists and producers. MAYJO has been selected three times by an internationally competitive recorded audition process to perform at the international conference of the Jazz Education Network (JEN): 2010 in St. Louis, Missouri; 2015 in San Diego, California and 2018 in Dallas, Texas.
