RACHMANINOFF: Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini
BERLIOZ: Symphonie Fantastique

The uniting themes in the works of this program are fantasy and mythology, both shared and personal. The journey kicks off with a work from living composer Michael Daugherty, “Red Cape Tango” from Metropolis Symphony—the red cape in question is Superman’s, and the work portrays the hero’s “dance of death” with Doomsday through haunting melodies in the bassoon, followed by shimmering strings.

The uniting themes in the works of this program are fantasy and mythology, both shared and personal. Next, Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Martinez breathes life into Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, who was a talent so unbelievable that a devilish mythology followed him throughout his lifetime and beyond. Finally, the orchestra presents Berlioz’s fever dream of obsession and fantasy in his most famous and brilliantly orchestrated Symphonie Fantastique.
