King of the Accordion Ramón Ayala has defined much of modern norteno music with his distinctive playing and lyrics. Though he added electric guitars and drums to his music, it still retains a traditional northern ranchera style. For more than forty years, Ramón Ayala’s music has captured the experience and the soul of the hard life in the Rio Grande borderlands. According to Texas Monthly, “Although Ayala’s songs are about love, they speak more broadly about the hard life. It is the little guy’s love song; his losses are thicker, more acutely painful. And yet he persists. He grins in poverty’s face.” Ramón Ayala has recorded more than 100 albums. He has been nominated for a Grammy Award eight times, and won twice.
