Omaha Symphony Piano Power: Rhapsody in Blue Holland Performing Arts Center

Thomas Wilkins, conductor
Louis Schwizgebel, piano
Xiayin Wang, piano

KORNGOLD:  Straussiana
PRICE:  Piano Concerto in One Movement
GERSHWIN:  Rhapsody in Blue
RACHMANINOFF:  Piano Concerto No. 2

Korngold’s delightful Straussiana waltzes us into a program of Piano Powerhouses performed by two extraordinary pianists! Florence Price’s recently discovered gem, her Piano Concerto in One Movement, kicks off a pair of works for soloist Louis Schwizgebel (“… an exceptional talent.” – Neue Luzerner Zeitung). Almost lost in a house demolition, Price’s concerto finds its rightful place in the concert hall; Schwizgebel follows it with Gershwin’s sweeping Rhapsody in Blue. Xiayin Wang (“…such assuredness, such delicacy… one is left breathless in musical awe.” – Musical America) then performs Rachmaninoff’s lush, hyper-romantic Piano Concerto No. 2, a work that is both thrilling and heartbreaking.
