Omaha Performing Arts Little Feat with Leftover Salmon Orpheum Theater Music

Fifty-two years of great music doesn’t squeeze down to one page very easily. “Dixie Chicken,” “Oh Atlanta,” “Willin’,” “Let it Roll,” “Spanish Moon,” and “Fat Man in the Bathtub” are just the merest hint of a repertoire that has inspired more joy and more dancing than you can imagine. Little Feat fused a broad span of styles and genres into something utterly distinctive, a mix of California rock, funk, folk, jazz, country, rockabilly, and New Orleans swamp boogie and more, all stirred into a rich gumbo that can only be Little Feat.  MORE INFORMATION

Little Feat is very possibly the last-man-standing example of what used to be the norm in American music, a fusion of a broad span of styles and genres into something utterly distinctive. They combined earthy, organic material with first-rate musicianship in a combination that transcends boundaries. Feat took California rock, funk, folk, jazz, country, roackabilly, and New Orleans swamp boogie and more, stirred it into a rich gumbo, and has been leading people in joyful dance ever since. The band was formed by lead vocalist and guitarist Lowell George and keyboardist Bill Payne in 1969 in Los Angeles. George disbanded the group because of creative differences shortly before his death in 1979. Surviving members re-formed Little Feat in 1987 and the band has remained active to the present. Guitarist Jimmy Page stated that Little Feat was his favorite American band in a 1975 Rolling Stone interview.

Leftover Salmon marked their 30-year anniversary in 2019 with Leftover Salmon: Thirty Years of Festival!, an intimate portrait of Leftover Salmon through the personal recollections of its band members, family, friends, former band-mates, managers, and the countless musicians they have influenced. It is a tale of friendships and losses, musical discoveries and Wild West adventures, and the brethren they surround themselves with who fortify Salmon’s unique voice. If someone wanted to understand what Americana music is, they could do no better than to go to a Leftover Salmon show for a musical tour, with the band taking them to Appalachia for an old-time bluegrass song, stopping at Bourbon Street in New Orleans for a swampy Cajun-influenced number, to the hallowed halls of the Ryman in Nashville, before returning to the mountains of Colorado to fire one up.
